An oil on board scene of 17 Gough Square London  which was the home of Dr Johnson at the end of the 17th century . Dr Johnson departed the house in 1759 and  from then on it was used as a small hotel being saved from destruction by the late Cecil Harmsworth MP in 1911.

The painting  is by William H Maile a well known Benfleet school artist  who was also an illustrator  of childrens books and comics ,'Lenny the Lion' being the most famous .  We think this  oil on Board dates around 1950 and is priced  at 50  guineas on the verso . Will Maile painted boats and sea scenes  and is better known in that genre  but this is an interesting slice of history and we do no know why he chose to paint the house which is the only surviving 17th century house in Gough Square .
